Nauman’s felicity at the keyboard and Ricky Ian Gordon’s astonishingly intricate compositions make this a constantly engaging release. The album contains two cycles of songs, including a quintet of dances. In these, Nauman beautifully enhances Gordon’s playful tweaks of the heightened passions in “Tango” and the exuberance of the dance entitled “Joy.” With the triptych of songs in “The Caste System,” Nauman proves particularly adept with articulating emotional intensity of the piece named “Mechanically.” Perhaps most enjoyable is the breezy “Desire Rag,” which puts a contemporary spin on the early 20th-century musical style.
